Biographical Record
King Toffa ascended the throne of the Kingdom of Hogbonu (Porto-Novo) in 1874. Facing relentless military pressure and predatory expansion from King Glele's neighboring Kingdom of Dahomey, Toffa pursued an astute diplomatic strategy, signing protectorate treaties with France in 1882 to safeguard his realm's independence.
A patron of commerce and traditional arts, King Toffa governed during the momentous transition into the colonial era, preserving the palace traditions and rituals of Hogbonu. His royal residence, the Palace of King Toffa, now houses the celebrated Honmé Museum in Porto-Novo, displaying royal thrones, musical instruments, and ancestral shrines.
