"A wise man can learn Hangul before the morning is over; a stupid man can learn it in the space of ten days. The spoken language of our country differs from that of China; I have made these letters so that all people may easily express their thoughts."

Archival Overview

Fourth King of the Joseon Dynasty revered as Korea's greatest monarch. Personally invented the Hangul phonetic alphabet in 1443 so common citizens could read and write, and sponsored world-pioneering rain gauges, celestial globes, and sundials.

Biographical Record

Establishing the Hall of Worthies (Jiphyeonjeon) in Gyeongbokgung Palace, Sejong gathered the kingdom's brightest scholars to pursue linguistics, agriculture, and astronomy. Distressed that Chinese characters (Hanja) disenfranchised illiterate peasants, he created the 28-letter phonetic script Hunminjeongeum ("The Proper Sounds for the Education of the People").

Alongside scientist Jang Yeong-sil, he invented the world's first standardized rain gauge (Cheugugi), water clocks, and improved printing movable metal types, transforming Korea into an intellectual powerhouse.
