Archival Overview
Kushite King of Napata who conquered all of Egypt in 728 BCE, founded the 25th Dynasty of 'Black Pharaohs', and recorded his epic triumph on the celebrated Victory Stela of Gebel Barkal.
Biographical Record
Piye was the son of King Kashta. When northern Egyptian prince Tefnakht threatened Thebes, Piye mobilized the veteran Kushite army from Napata, marching north along the Nile in a holy crusade to restore religious piety and order to Egypt.
Piye besieged and captured Memphis, receiving the submission of all northern Delta princes while strictly forbidding the looting of temples and showing compassion to defeated rivals. Returning triumphantly to his Sudanese capital Napata with immense tribute, he erected the famous 159-line 'Victory Stela' at Gebel Barkal and was buried with his beloved royal horses at el-Kurru.
