Biographical Record
Metacomet, known to English colonists as King Philip, was the second son of Massasoit, the sachem who originally allied with the Mayflower Pilgrims. As colonial expansion relentlessly seized indigenous lands and threatened sovereignty, Metacomet built a powerful multi-tribal alliance.
Beginning in 1675, Metacomet launched a synchronized uprising that destroyed dozens of English towns and brought the Massachusetts Bay Colony to the brink of collapse. He fought until he was ambushed and killed at Mount Hope in August 1676.
