Archival Overview
Beloved King of Norway from 1957 to 1991, Olympic sailing champion, and decorated wartime military leader affectionately known as Folkekongen ('The People's King').
Biographical Record
Prince Alexander of Denmark was born on July 2, 1903, at Sandringham, England, and renamed Olav upon his father's accession as King of Norway in 1905. An accomplished sportsman, he won an Olympic gold medal in sailing at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games.
During World War II, Crown Prince Olav was appointed Chief of Defence in exile, coordinating Norwegian free forces alongside the Allies. Ascending the throne in 1957, he earned the deep affection of his people for his down-to-earth modesty, famously traveling on public trams during the 1973 oil crisis. Upon his death in 1991, tens of thousands of Norwegians spontaneously carpeted the Palace Square with burning candles.
