Archival Overview
Numidian prince and peerless cavalry commander whose decisive intervention alongside Hamilcar Barca saved Carthage during the Truceless Mercenary War.
Biographical Record
Naravas was an illustrious Numidian nobleman and cavalry commander renowned across the western Mediterranean for his extraordinary equestrian tactics. During the Mercenary War (241–237 BC), when Carthage was on the brink of total annihilation by rebellious mercenaries, Naravas made the pivotal decision to ride directly into the camp of Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca with 2,000 elite Numidian horsemen.
Hamilcar was so deeply impressed by Naravas's bravery, chivalry, and tactical mastery that he pledged the hand of his third daughter—the sister of Hannibal Barca—in marriage to the Numidian prince. Naravas's swift cavalry maneuvers outflanked the mercenary rebel armies at the Battle of the Saw, securing victory and establishing the legendary reputation of Numidian cavalry throughout antiquity.
