Biographical Record

King Narai (1633–1688) opened Siam to global commerce, welcoming Persian, Dutch, English, Chinese, and French merchants. Advised by Greek adventurer Constantine Phaulkon, Narai built a second palace at Lopburi equipped with European astronomical observatories and waterworks designed by French engineers.

In 1686, Narai dispatched a historic Siamese embassy led by Kosa Pan to the court of Louis XIV at Versailles, stunning the French court with their diplomatic poise. His court fostered the golden age of Siamese poetry under court poet Sunthorn Phu's predecessors. He was overthrown during the anti-foreign 1688 Siamese Revolution.
