Archival Overview
Mwami of Burundi for over fifty years who reigned under German, Belgian, and United Nations trusteeship, guiding Burundi to full independence in July 1962 as a constitutional monarchy.
Biographical Record
Mwambutsa IV Bangiricenge was enthroned as Mwami of Burundi in December 1915 at age three following the death of his father King Mutaga IV. Reigned through the German departure, League of Nations Belgian mandate, and UN Trusteeship, Mwambutsa navigated intense diplomatic pressures from colonial authorities.
On July 1, 1962, Mwambutsa presided over Burundi's proclamation of full independence as a constitutional monarchy. Striving to maintain political balance between Hutu and Tutsi factions in the royal court, he appointed mixed cabinets. Deposed in 1966 by his younger son Ntare V during military unrest led by Michel Micombero, Mwambutsa lived in dignified Swiss exile until his death in 1977.
