Biographical Record
Prince Mongkut (1804–1868) spent twenty-seven years as a Buddhist monk before ascending the throne, mastering Sanskrit, Pali, Latin, English, astronomy, and Western mathematics, and founding the reformed Thammayut Nikaya Buddhist monastic order.
Ascending the throne in 1851, Mongkut signed the landmark 1855 Bowring Treaty with Great Britain, establishing free trade while avoiding colonial subjugation. An accomplished astronomer, Mongkut calculated the exact path and timing of the August 18, 1868 total solar eclipse at Wakhor, inviting French and British scientists to verify his calculations, during which he contracted fatal malaria.
