Archival Overview

Fourth monarch of the Chakri Dynasty of Siam who embraced modern Western science and diplomacy to preserve Siamese independence from European colonial powers, celebrated as the Father of Thai Science.

Biographical Record

Prince Mongkut spent twenty-seven years as a Buddhist monk, mastering Sanskrit, Pali, Latin, English, and astronomy, and founding the reformed Thammayut monastic order. Ascending the throne as Rama IV in 1851 at age forty-seven, he opened Siam to modernization.

Mongkut negotiated the 1855 Bowring Treaty with Britain, defusing colonial tensions through free trade. An accomplished astronomer, he mathematically calculated the exact time and path of the total solar eclipse of August 18, 1868, inviting European scientists to observe it with him at Wakhor, where he contracted the malaria that claimed his life.
