Archival Overview
Christian King of Makuria in northern Sudan who famously marched an army of 100,000 Nubian horsemen north to Fustat (Cairo) around 745 CE, compelling the Umayyad governor to release the imprisoned Patriarch of Alexandria.
Biographical Record
Ruling the United Christian Kingdom of Nubia from his capital at Old Dongola on the Nile, King Kyriakos held supreme authority over Makuria and Nobatia. When the Umayyad governor of Egypt, Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, threw Michael I, Patriarch of the Coptic Church of Alexandria, into prison, Kyriakos reacted with swift military force.
As recorded in the medieval *History of the Patriarchs of Alexandria*, Kyriakos led an immense cavalry army down the Nile valley to the gates of Fustat. Terrified of the Nubian cavalry, the Umayyad governor immediately liberated the Patriarch with honors, securing a lasting diplomatic peace.
