Archival Overview
King of Kush and brother of Alara who extended Kushite imperial power northward into Upper Egypt, peacefully installing his daughter Amenirdis I as God's Wife of Amun in Thebes.
Biographical Record
Kashta succeeded his brother Alara as sovereign of the Kingdom of Kush. Capitalizing on political fragmentation among Libyan dynasts in northern Egypt, Kashta advanced northward past the First Cataract at Elephantine (Aswan) into Upper Egypt.
Exercising profound diplomatic statecraft, Kashta established Kushite royal sovereignty over the holy city of Thebes. He successfully negotiated for his daughter Amenirdis I to be adopted as the God's Wife of Amun—the supreme spiritual office in Egypt—laying the peaceful foundation for his son Piye's full conquest of Egypt.
