Biographical Record

Born Jubo Jubogha in Igboland, Jaja (1821–1891) was sold into slavery at twelve in Bonny, joining the Anna Pepple House. Through extraordinary business acumen and integrity, he cleared the house's massive debts and was unanimously elected head of the trading house in 1863.

In 1869, Jaja broke away to found the independent Kingdom of Opobo, monopolizing the palm oil trade by shipping directly to Liverpool. When British vice-consul Harry Johnston demanded free British trade access, Jaja refused. Johnston lured him aboard a warship under a truce flag, kidnapped him, and exiled him to the West Indies.
