Archival Overview
King of Numidia, scholar-historian, and author of books in the Punic and Numidian languages consulted by Roman historian Sallust.
Biographical Record
King Hiempsal II was the son of King Gauda and the father of King Juba I. Ascending the Numidian throne in 88 BC, he navigated the chaotic Roman Civil War between Marius and Sulla. When the younger Marius fled to Africa, Hiempsal received him with courteous hospitality while strategically safeguarding his own borders.
Hiempsal II was renowned throughout the ancient Mediterranean not only as an astute monarch but as a distinguished historian and intellectual. He authored historical volumes in the Punic and Berber languages recording the origins, mythology, and tribal lineages of the African peoples—works specifically cited by Roman historian Sallust in 'Bellum Jugurthinum' as authoritative historical texts.
