"I am unable to appoint a government that lacks the confidence of the Norwegian people. All for Norway!"

Archival Overview

Beloved monarch of Norway who reigned for 52 years, adopted the motto 'Alt for Norge', and became the ultimate symbol of national resistance by defying Hitler's ultimatum in 1940.

Biographical Record

Prince Carl of Denmark was born on August 3, 1872, at Charlottenlund Palace. Following the peaceful dissolution of Norway's union with Sweden in 1905, he was elected King of Norway by plebiscite, taking the historic Old Norse name Haakon VII and choosing the enduring motto Alt for Norge (All for Norway).

When Nazi Germany invaded Norway on April 9, 1940, King Haakon issued his historic 'King's No' (Kongens nei) to the German minister, refusing to appoint Nazi puppet Vidkun Quisling. Escaping capture through heavy bombardment into British exile, his broadcasts from London united the Norwegian Home Front resistance for five years until his triumphant return in June 1945.
