"Rejoice and be glad, for the faith of our forefathers is restored to the highlands of Ethiopia."

Archival Overview

Emperor of Ethiopia (reigned 1632–1667) who restored the traditional Ethiopian Orthodox faith, expelled Jesuit missionaries, and founded the permanent imperial capital of Gondar with its magnificent stone fortress, Fasil Ghebbi.

Biographical Record

Fasilides was born into the Solomonic dynasty during a period of intense religious upheaval when his father Susenyos declared Roman Catholicism the state religion, igniting bloody civil conflicts. Upon Susenyos's abdication in 1632, Fasilides immediately reinstated Ethiopian Orthodoxy, expelled Jesuit emissaries, and ushered in centuries of religious peace.

In 1636, breaking with the medieval tradition of roving imperial tent-cities, Fasilides founded Gondar as a permanent fortress-capital. He commissioned the iconic castle complex Fasil Ghebbi—dubbed the 'Camelot of Africa'—along with numerous arched stone bridges and seven royal churches, initiating the Gondarine architectural renaissance.
