Archival Overview
Last reigning King of Egypt and the Sudan (reigned 1936-1952) whose glamorous yet tumultuous reign witnessed World War II, the Abdeen Palace incident of 1942, and the 1952 Free Officers Revolution.
Biographical Record
Ascending the throne at age sixteen to immense popular adulation as 'the Boy King', Farouk was educated at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich. In February 1942, British tanks surrounded Abdeen Palace, forcing him to appoint a Wafdist government in a blow to monarchical prestige.
An avid collector of numismatics, art, and automobiles, his later reign was marred by political factionalism and the 1948 Palestine War. On July 26, 1952, following the Free Officers coup, he peacefully abdicated the throne aboard the royal yacht El Mahrousa, sailing into European exile.
