Biographical Record
Francis Michael "King" Clancy was one of the most colourful and spirited personalities in hockey history. Born in Ottawa, Clancy starred on the Ottawa Senators' famous 1920s dynasty, winning two Stanley Cups before Conn Smythe purchased him for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1930 for an unprecedented $35,000.
Clancy led the Leafs to the 1932 Stanley Cup in the newly opened Maple Leaf Gardens. Later serving as NHL referee, head coach, and vice president of the Maple Leafs, Clancy remained the beloved soul of the franchise for over fifty years. The NHL's King Clancy Memorial Trophy honors leadership and humanitarian contribution.
