Archival Overview

Fifth monarch of Siam (1868–1910) under the Chakri Dynasty, revered as 'The Great Beloved King', who abolished human slavery, modernized government and railways, and preserved Siam's independence as the only uncolonized nation in Southeast Asia.

Biographical Record

King Chulalongkorn (1853–1910) inherited the throne at age fifteen during the peak of European imperial expansion, with British Burma on the west and French Indochina on the east. Adopting the strategy of modernizing before the colonizers could use 'backwardness' as an excuse, Chulalongkorn overhauled Siam's administration.

In 1905, Chulalongkorn completed the peaceful, phased abolition of all slavery and debt bondage in Siam without civil war. He established modern ministerial governance, built the Royal State Railways and telegraph lines, reformed the legal codes with Belgian jurists, and skillfully ceded peripheral borderlands to Britain and France to guarantee Siam's sovereign independence.
