Archival Overview
Fifth King of the Belgians whose 42-year reign provided a deeply moral and unifying anchor for Belgium, peacefully steering the state's transition to a federal democracy and granting Congo independence.
Biographical Record
Baudouin was born on September 7, 1930, at Stuyvenberg Castle, the elder son of King Leopold III and Queen Astrid. Ascending the throne in 1951 at age twenty following the Royal Question and his father's abdication, Baudouin brought profound personal humility, moral integrity, and deep Christian faith to the monarchy.
Reigning for over four decades alongside Queen Fabiola, Baudouin deftly reconciled Flemish and Walloon communities through complex constitutional federalization reforms. In 1990, driven by strict Catholic conscience, he stepped aside for 36 hours rather than sign a law decriminalizing abortion. His sudden death in 1993 provoked unprecedented nationwide grief, with over 500,000 citizens queuing in Brussels to pay homage.
