Archival Overview
Early King of Mauretania who provided young Masinissa with an escort of 4,000 elite horsemen to fight his way back into Numidia to claim his throne.
Biographical Record
King Baga is the earliest historically attested King of Mauretania recorded in classical Greco-Roman sources. Ruling in the late 3rd century BC, his kingdom encompassed the northern territories of western Algeria and northern Morocco, commanding vast tribal levies of swift and formidable light cavalry.
When the young prince Masinissa was stripped of his ancestral inheritance by rivals Syphax and Lacumazes in 206 BC, he sought refuge at the court of King Baga. Demonstrating exceptional pan-Berber solidarity, Baga supplied Masinissa with 4,000 veteran Mauretanian cavalry who safely escorted him to the borders of Massylian Numidia, enabling Masinissa to launch his epic reconquest of the Numidian throne.
