Archival Overview
The last independent King of Numidia, who raised a liberation army in Hispania to reclaim his ancestral throne and drive Roman adventurers from Cirta.
Biographical Record
King Arabio was the son of King Masinissa II of Western Numidia. Following Julius Caesar's victory at the Battle of Thapsus in 46 BC, Arabio's realm was annexed and his ancestral capital of Cirta was awarded to the Italian mercenary adventurer Publius Sittius. Undeterred, Arabio escaped to Hispania, where he joined the sons of Pompey and gained vital military experience.
Returning to North Africa in 44 BC after Caesar's assassination, Arabio mobilized loyal Numidian warriors, launched a brilliant tactical offensive, defeated and killed Publius Sittius, and recaptured Cirta. For several years he ruled an independent Numidian kingdom, standing as the final sovereign monarch to fight for Numidian self-determination before his assassination around 40 BC.
