Archival Overview
Visionary sovereign who led Afghanistan to complete independence from the British Empire in 1919 following the Third Anglo-Afghan War, drafted Afghanistan's first constitution, and built modern schools.
Biographical Record
Amanullah Khan was born on June 1, 1892, in Paghman. Ascending the throne in 1919 following the assassination of his father Emir Habibullah Khan, he immediately declared full sovereignty and launched the Third Anglo-Afghan War, forcing Britain to sign the Treaty of Rawalpindi recognizing unconditional Afghan independence on August 19, 1919.
Taking the title King, Amanullah introduced radical modernizing reforms: he enacted the nation's first constitution (Nizamnama) in 1923, abolished slavery, opened schools for girls, introduced modern legal codes, and designed the European-style capital of Darulaman. Conservatism and tribal rebellions forced him into Italian exile in 1929, but he remains venerated as the architect of Afghan independence.
