Manikongo (King) of the Kingdom of Kongo who reclaimed his throne from the devastating Jaga invasions with Portuguese assistance and Europeanized Kongo's royal court ceremonies.

Biographical Record

Alvaro I (c. 1530–1587) founded the Kwilu dynasty of Kongo in 1568. When fierce nomadic Jaga warriors sacked the capital Mbanza Kongo, Alvaro evacuated the royal court to an island in the Congo River. In 1571, aided by a Portuguese expeditionary force under Francisco de Gouveia, he liberated the capital.

Renaming Mbanza Kongo as Sao Salvador, Alvaro modernized the kingdom's diplomatic administration, sending ambassadors to Lisbon, Madrid, and the Vatican to establish an autonomous Kongo Catholic bishopric independent of Portuguese control.
