Young Congolese noblewoman and spiritual prophetess who founded the Antonian movement. Preached that Christ and the Apostles were born in Kongo, advocated for national reunification against civil war, and was burned at the stake.

Biographical Record

Possessed during severe illness by the spirit of Saint Anthony of Padua, Kimpa Vita shed her aristocratic privilege to wander barefoot across the war-torn Kingdom of Kongo. Preaching peace and spiritual renewal, she condemned European slave traders and urged rival monarchs to lay down arms.

Thousands gathered in the reoccupied capital of São Salvador under her banner. Betrayed by rival princes and Portuguese Capuchin missionaries, she was burned at the stake with her infant son at age twenty-two, celebrated as an eternal African martyr of liberation.
