Archival Overview
Last great King of Kings of the Sasanian Empire 'Parviz' (The Victorious), who conquered Syria, Palestine, Jerusalem, and Egypt from the Byzantine Empire, captured the True Cross, and presided over the golden age of Persian music, poetry, and art.
Biographical Record
Khosrow II Parviz (c. 570–628 CE) regained his throne in 591 with the assistance of Byzantine Emperor Maurice. Following Maurice's murder by Phocas in 602, Khosrow launched an epic war of vengeance, mobilizing brilliant generals Shahrbaraz and Shahin.
Sasanian armies swept across the Near East, capturing Antioch, Damascus, and Jerusalem (retrieving the True Cross in 614) and annexing Egypt in 619, recreating the ancient borders of the Achaemenid Empire. A lavish patron of culture, his legendary love for the Christian Armenian princess Shirin was immortalized by Nizami Ganjavi.
