Archival Overview

Zenith ruler of the Sasanian Persian Empire celebrated across Middle Eastern literature as "Anushirvan the Just." Modernized taxation, introduced rational bureaucratic governance, and translated Indian fables (Panchatantra) and Greek philosophy into Pahlavi.

Biographical Record

Ascending the throne in Ctesiphon, Khosrow enacted agrarian reforms, surveyed all cultivated land, and paid his standing army directly from the treasury, eliminating feudal corruption. He erected the monumental Arch of Ctesiphon (Taq Kasra)—the largest single-span vaulted brick arch in the world.

When Emperor Justinian closed the pagan Academy of Athens in 529 CE, Khosrow welcomed the fleeing Neoplatonic philosophers to his court, transforming Gundeshapur into an intellectual hub where medical texts were translated from Sanskrit, Greek, and Syriac.
