Archival Overview
Legendary Algerian singer who brought the ancient Saharan Bedouin vocal art of 'Aiyai' from the desert tents of the Zibans to national glory, celebrated for his immortal epic 'Hiziya'.
Biographical Record
Ahmed Ben Maamar, known universally as Khelifi Ahmed, grew up in the desert oasis of Sidi Khaled near Biskra, absorbing the nomadic flute (gasba) and raw desert poetry of the Sahara. Moving to Algiers in 1943, he began broadcasting the haunting, powerful vocal style known as the 'Aiyai'.
Accompanied only by the hollow reed gasba flute and the deep bendir frame drum, his gravelly, transcendent voice brought Mohamed Ben Guittoun's tragic 19th-century desert love epic 'Hiziya' to eternal life across North Africa and the Arab world.
