Archival Overview
Eminent 20th-century Algerian classical tenor and oud master who guarded and transmitted the centuries-old Andalusian Gharnati and Hawzi musical repertoire of Tlemcen.
Biographical Record
Khelifa Stambouli was born in the historic Medina of Tlemcen, where classical Andalusian musical traditions survived unbroken following the fall of Granada in 1492. From boyhood, he sat at the feet of traditional masters of the Gharnati school.
Possessing a tenor voice of celestial purity and profound emotional nuance, Stambouli revived dozens of ancient qasidas by medieval poets such as Ben Msaib and Ben Triki. He trained an entire generation of Algerian musicians, ensuring that Tlemcen's sacred musical memory remained vibrant and untarnished.
