Archival Overview
Transformative Khedive of Egypt and Sudan (reigned 1863-1879) who modernized Egypt's infrastructure, constructed 'Paris on the Nile' (Downtown Cairo), laid thousands of miles of railways and telegraphs, and inaugurated the Suez Canal in 1869.
Biographical Record
Grandson of Muhammad Ali Pasha, Ismail was educated in Paris. He transformed Cairo with grand Haussmannian boulevards, public gas lighting, the Khedivial Opera House, and public gardens, famously declaring that Egypt was now part of Europe.
He completed the Suez Canal, inaugurated in November 1869 with lavish international festivities attended by European royalty. Despite crippling debts that led to his deposition in 1879, his architectural and infrastructural vision established modern Egypt.
