Archival Overview
Grand Admiral (Kapudan Pasha) of the Ottoman Navy who defeated the Holy League at the Battle of Preveza, establishing Ottoman naval supremacy across the Mediterranean.
Biographical Record
Hayreddin Barbarossa (c. 1478–1546), born Khizr, was the foremost naval admiral of the Ottoman Empire. Following the death of his elder brother Oruç (the original 'Barbarossa', or Redbeard), Khizr took command of their corsair fleet, conquered Algiers, and offered the territory to Ottoman Sultan Selim I in exchange for janissary garrisons and naval integration.
Appointed Grand Admiral (Kapudan Pasha) of the Ottoman Navy by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1533, Barbarossa reorganized the imperial dockyards of the Golden Horn. In September 1538, at the Battle of Preveza off northwestern Greece, Barbarossa commanded an outnumbered Ottoman fleet of 122 galleys against the combined Holy League armada of 302 warships led by the legendary Genoese admiral Andrea Doria. Employing brilliant wind tactics and crescent formations, Barbarossa routed the Christian armada without losing a single galley, securing Ottoman naval supremacy across the Mediterranean for over three decades.
