Supreme military commander and co-founder of Fatah, celebrated as the strategic mastermind of the 1987 First Intifada.
Biographical Record
Khalil al-Wazir was born in Ramla and was expelled with his family in July 1948 to the Bureij refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. In the mid-1950s, while studying in Alexandria, he formed a clandestine partnership with Yasser Arafat, together publishing the militant journal Filastinuna and officially founding Fatah in Kuwait in 1959.
Abu Jihad directed the military wing of the Palestinian revolution (Al-Asifah) for three decades. Loved by grassroots fighters for his modesty, strategic discipline, and absolute incorruptibility, he orchestrated the civilian resistance, strikes, and youth coordination of the 1987 First Intifada before an elite Israeli commando raid assassinated him in his home in Tunis in April 1988.
