Archival Overview
Supreme military commander and ruler of the Mahdist State of Sudan from 1885 to 1898 who organized a vast sovereign state, minted currency, and commanded tens of thousands of Ansars at Omdurman.
Biographical Record
Abdallahi ibn Muhammad, known simply as 'The Khalifa', was born into the Ta'aisha Baggara Arab tribe in Darfur. As the chief general and closest companion to Muhammad Ahmad al-Mahdi, he was nominated as his supreme successor (Khalifat al-Mahdi) upon the Mahdi's death in June 1885.
For thirteen years, the Khalifa ruled an independent Sudanese empire spanning millions of square kilometers from his capital at Omdurman. He created administrative ministries, built gunboats on the Nile, and minted national coinage. When Lord Kitchener invaded with Maxim guns in 1898, the Khalifa fought heroically at Omdurman and died seated upon his prayer mat under fire at Umm Diwaykarat in 1899.
