Khalid ibn al-Walid (592–642 CE) is recognized as one of the most brilliant operational and tactical commanders in military history. Combining rapid mobile cavalry warfare with extraordinary strategic boldness, he famously marched across the waterless Syrian desert to take Byzantine defenses in the rear.

At the Battle of Yarmouk in 636 CE, his masterclass of double envelopment annihilated the vastly superior imperial Byzantine army, ending Roman rule in Syria and reshaping the geopolitical destiny of the Middle East.
