Archival Overview

Daughter and intellectual collaborator of Imam Sahnun, celebrated across North Africa as one of the earliest female jurists (Faqiha) who issued fatwas, taught women, and advised her father on legal rulings.

Biographical Record

Khadija bint Sahnun was raised in the scholarly home of Imam Sahnun, the author of the canonical Maliki text *Al-Mudawwana*. Blessed with acute analytical intellect and encyclopedic knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence, Khadija became her father's primary intellectual confidante.

Whenever complex legal dilemmas regarding women's inheritance, marriage contracts, or property disputes arose, Imam Sahnun routinely consulted Khadija before issuing rulings. Following her father's death, she held regular teaching circles in Kairouan, training generations of North African women in legal sciences and ethics, celebrated by biographer Qadi Iyad as a paragon of wisdom and modesty.
