Archival Overview
Formidable Berber princess of the Awraba tribe, wife of Idris I and mother of Idris II, whose political diplomacy and tribal alliances secured the founding of the first Moroccan kingdom.
Biographical Record
Daughter of Ishaq ibn Muhammad, supreme chieftain of the Awraba Berber confederation in the Zerhoun mountains, Kenza married Idris I in 789 CE, sealing the alliance between indigenous Amazigh clans and the Sharifian house. Following Idris I's assassination by Abbasid agents, Kenza assumed the royal regency.
She protected her infant son Idris II, educated him in tribal leadership and Arabic, and orchestrated his formal accession before the assembled Berber tribal chiefs. Later, she wisely counseled Idris II to partition administrative responsibilities among his sons, ensuring provincial harmony.
