Archival Overview

Founding Father and first President of Zambia who led the nation to independence in 1964 and provided vital sanctuary to southern African liberation movements against apartheid.

Biographical Record

Kenneth David Kaunda (1924–2021), affectionately known across Africa as 'KK', was a Zambian anti-colonial leader and statesman who served as the first President of Zambia from 1964 to 1991. The son of an educator and Presbyterian missionary from Malawi, Kaunda worked as a headmaster before becoming president of the United National Independence Party (UNIP) in 1960, organizing the non-violent 'Cha-cha-cha' civil disobedience campaign that ended British colonial rule.

As President, Kaunda promulgated the national philosophy of 'Zambian Humanism', nationalizing the copper mines and building universal education and healthcare systems across Zambia. At immense economic and military cost, Kaunda transformed Zambia into the strategic base and sanctuary for Southern African liberation movements—hosting the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa, SWAPO of Namibia, and ZAPU/ZANU of Zimbabwe. In 1991, he set a shining democratic precedent by peacefully conceding defeat in multi-party elections, later becoming a global crusader against HIV/AIDS.
