Biographical Record
Born into a wealthy pawnshop family in rural Iwate, Kenji was deeply pained by peasant poverty and renounced his family's business to dedicate his life to agricultural science and Buddhist philosophy. Teaching farmers composting and soil science, he shared their grueling manual labor in bitter cold.
Kenji poured his cosmic imagination into children's fables and visionary poems of northern landscapes. His allegorical novella 'Night on the Galactic Railroad' (Ginga Tetsudo no Yoru) explores friendship, self-sacrifice, and universal happiness. His notebook poem 'Ame ni mo Makezu', discovered posthumously in his suitcase, remains an enduring national anthem of resilience.
