Archival Overview
Kenyan distance-running prodigy who shattered the world marathon record in 2023 with an astonishing time of 2:00:35 at the Chicago Marathon, becoming the first person in history to run an official marathon in under 2 hours and 1 minute.
Biographical Record
Kelvin Kiptum (1999–2024) stunned the athletic world with the most explosive entrance in marathon history. Herding cattle as a boy in the high-altitude Great Rift Valley of Kenya, Kiptum ran his first official marathon in Valencia in December 2022, clocking 2:01:53—the fastest debut marathon ever recorded.
In April 2023, he captured the London Marathon title with the second-fastest time in history (2:01:25). Six months later, on October 8, 2023, at the Chicago Marathon, Kiptum delivered an epochal performance, obliterating Eliud Kipchoge's world record by 34 seconds to finish in 2:00:35.
Possessing an unmatched negative-split running style, he was widely anticipated to become the first human to break the mythical two-hour barrier in an official race before his life was tragically cut short in a car crash at age 24.
