Biographical Record
Aïcha Adjouri, celebrated by her stage name Keltoum, was born in Blida. In 1935, she was discovered by theater master Mahieddine Bachtarzi, defying fierce colonial and patriarchal taboos to become the first professional Algerian woman to play dramatic leading roles on stage.
In 1966, she delivered one of the most unforgettable performances in world cinema as the mother searching for her captured son across colonial barbed-wire internment camps in Mohamed Lakhdar-Hamina's 'Le Vent des Aurès' (Best First Work at Cannes, 1967). Her poignant silence became the universal face of Algerian motherly sacrifice.
