Archival Overview
British cell biologist who pioneered somatic cell nuclear transfer, playing the central role in creating Dolly the sheep, the world's first mammal cloned from an adult cell.
Biographical Record
Keith Campbell studied microbiology at the University of London and earned his PhD in cellular biology from the University of Sussex. In 1991, he joined the Roslin Institute near Edinburgh, focusing on controlling the cell cycle during nuclear transfer.
Campbell deduced that synchronizing donor and recipient cells in a resting state (quiescence, G0 phase) was the key to successful reprogramming. In 1996, his breakthrough technique resulted in the birth of Dolly the sheep, opening brand-new horizons in stem cell research, regenerative medicine, and animal genetics.
Key Life Milestones
Creation of Dolly the Sheep
Successfully implemented cell quiescence protocol to clone Dolly from an adult mammary gland cell.
Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine
Co-awarded the prestigious Shaw Prize for breakthroughs in cellular differentiation and nuclear transfer.
