Archival Overview

Beloved Japanese manga artist who created the global phenomenon Yu-Gi-Oh!, spawning the world's best-selling trading card game with over 35 billion cards sold, who died heroically rescuing swimmers off Okinawa.

Biographical Record

Kazuo Takahashi, known pen name Kazuki Takahashi, was born in Tokyo, Japan. A fan of games, puzzles, and comics, he struggled for a decade as a commercial designer and manga assistant before conceiving a manga where battles were fought not through physical violence, but through games and mental wits.

In 1996, Takahashi serialized Yu-Gi-Oh! ("King of Games") in Weekly Shonen Jump. Following the timid Yugi Mutou, who solves the ancient Egyptian Millennium Puzzle and channels an ancient Pharaoh's spirit, the manga introduced the fictional card game "Magic & Wizards." The concept exploded into a global multimedia juggernaut. Konami licensed the real-life Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game in 1999, which Guinness World Records certified as the top-selling trading card game in history with over 35 billion cards sold. In July 2022, while snorkeling in Okinawa, Takahashi bravely swam out to assist an American military officer in rescuing three civilians trapped in a dangerous rip current, drowning during the selfless rescue effort. The US military honored him as a hero.
