Archival Overview

First Indigenous North American woman canonized as a Roman Catholic saint, revered for her ascetic piety, devotion, and compassion at Kahnawake.

Biographical Record

Kateri Tekakwitha was born to a Mohawk father and Christian Algonquin mother. Orphaned at age four by smallpox that scarred her face and impaired her eyesight, she was given the name Tekakwitha.

Baptized into the Catholic faith at age twenty by Jesuit missionaries, she fled south-facing hostility to join the Christian Mohawk community of Kahnawake on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River. There she lived a life of rigorous mortification and profound prayer until her death at twenty-four, canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.
