Biographical Record
Karin Maria Boye was born on October 26, 1900, in Gothenburg. Educated at Uppsala and Stockholm universities, she was a member of the socialist anti-fascist Clarté group and co-founded the pioneering Swedish modernist magazine Spektrum in 1931, introducing T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land to Scandinavian readers.
Boye's lyrical poetry explored existential vulnerability, psychological truth, and gender non-conformity, immortalized in verses such as Visst gör det ont när knoppar brister ('Yes, of course it hurts when buds burst'). In 1940, watching the rise of totalitarianism in Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, she published her masterpiece Kallocain, a terrifying dystopian novel of a police surveillance state powered by a truth-drug. Overcome by grief over World War II and personal despair, she took her own life on a hillside in Alingsås in April 1941.
