Biographical Record

Ascending the throne at seven under corrupt regents, the Kangxi Emperor (1654–1722) ousted regent Oboi at fourteen to take absolute command. Over six decades, he crushed the Revolt of the Three Feudatories, incorporated Taiwan into the empire, expelled Russian Cossacks in the Treaty of Nerchinsk (1689), and pacified Mongolia.

Kangxi was a dedicated scholar who studied Western astronomy and mathematics with Jesuit court scholars like Ferdinand Verbiest. He commissioned the monumental 'Kangxi Dictionary' (containing 47,035 characters) and governed with personal fiscal frugality and daily administrative diligence.
