Venerable leader of the National Democratic Party, moral conscience of Iraqi parliamentary democracy, and champion of social justice.
Biographical Record
Kamil al-Chadirchi was born in Baghdad into a prominent patrician family. Dedicated from youth to progressive political reform, he was a key figure in the reformist Al-Ahali group in the 1930s, advocating social democracy, constitutional governance, agrarian reform, and freedom of the press.
In 1946, Chadirchi founded the National Democratic Party (Al-Hizb al-Watani al-Dimuqrati) and published the influential independent daily Sawt al-Ahali. Refusing ministerial posts whenever civil liberties were curtailed, he suffered repeated imprisonment and censorship, remaining revered across all Iraqi political factions as the principled father of Iraqi democratic thought.
