First monarch of the unified Kingdom of Hawaii (1810–1819) who combined supreme martial prowess with modern diplomacy to unite all the Hawaiian Islands, preserved Hawaiian independence against European empires, and established the humanitarian Law of the Splintered Paddle.
Biographical Record
Kamehameha I (c. 1758–1819) fulfilled the ancient prophecy of the Naha Stone by lifting the massive volcanic boulder as a youth. Integrating Western cannons and muskets with traditional Polynesian sailing canoes and spearmen, he conquered Maui, Oahu, and Molokai, culminating in the 1795 Battle of Nuʻuanu where defending forces were driven over mountain palisades.
By peacefully bringing Kauai into the realm in 1810, Kamehameha created the sovereign united Kingdom of Hawaii. Following an incident where two fishermen split a canoe paddle over his head when he was caught in a reef, Kamehameha enacted the 'Law of the Splintered Paddle' (Kānāwai Māmalahoe), decreeing that women, children, and travelers may walk in peace along highways without molestation.
