Archival Overview
Supreme master of Persian miniature painting whose psychological realism and architectural dynamism defined the ateliers of Herat and Tabriz.
Biographical Record
Kamal ud-Din Behzad was born in Herat and trained under Mirak Naqqash, flourishing under the brilliant patronage of the Timurid Sultan Husayn Bayqarah and his vizier Alisher Navoi. Following the Safavid rise, Shah Ismail I brought Behzad to Tabriz in 1522, appointing him head (ketabdar) of the royal imperial library and ateliers.
Behzad revolutionized Persian manuscript illumination by introducing realistic human movement, subtle facial expressions, complex architectural perspectives, and scenes of everyday labor alongside royal epics. His illustrations for Nizami's Khamsa and Saadi's Bustan are celebrated worldwide as the zenith of Islamic painting.
