Archival Overview
Eloquent Palestinian Christian poet and official PLO spokesman known as 'The Conscience', assassinated in Beirut alongside Kamal Adwan and Abu Youssef.
Biographical Record
Kamal Butros Nasser was born in Gaza and raised in Birzeit into a prominent Palestinian Christian family, graduating in political science from the American University of Beirut in 1945. Returning to Ramallah, he established the newspaper Al-Jadid and was elected to the Jordanian parliament in 1956, fearlessly opposing foreign interference.
Exiled by Israeli authorities after the 1967 war, Nasser was elected to the PLO Executive Committee and appointed official spokesman and editor of the magazine Falastin al-Thawra. Hailed as the moral conscience of the revolution for his humanist poetry and commitment to a secular democratic state, he was assassinated by an Israeli commando squad in his apartment in Beirut in April 1973.
