Archival Overview
Iconic Finnish designer known as 'the conscience of Finnish design' who revolutionized everyday tableware with functional, geometric, multi-use classics like Teema ceramics and Kartio glassware.
Biographical Record
Kaj Gabriel Franck was born on November 9, 1911, in Vyborg. Studying furniture design at the Central School of Applied Arts, he became art director of the Arabia ceramic factory in 1945 and later also design director of Nuutajärvi glassworks.
Franck eliminated ostentatious bourgeois tableware sets, creating versatile, affordable, stackable everyday items reduced to basic geometric forms: the circle, the cone, and the rectangle. His Kilta series (redesigned as Teema in 1981) and conical Kartio glassware became staples of Nordic households. Franck championed sustainability, simplicity, and democratic design long before they became modern design buzzwords.
